The Armenian Army (Armenian: Հայկական բանակ, Haykakan Banak) is the largest branch of the Armed Forces of Armenia and consists of the ground forces responsible for the country's land-based operations. It was established in conjunction with the other components of Armenia's military on January 28, 1992, several months after the republic declared its independence from the Soviet Union.
Armenia has steadily increased its stockpile as well, with its weapons mostly supplied by Russia. By 2010, the Armenian Armed Forces has acknowledged that it possesses advanced Russian weapons which could counter any preemptive Azerbaijani offensive.
Measures were subsequently taken to begin the formation of a national army. The defence minister claimed the property of the former USSR 7th Army, which was deployed in Armenia (Hayastan 16 Jan. 1992, 90), and the Ministry of Defence issued an appeal to all officers of Armenian nationality to join the Armenian army (Izvestiya 29 Feb. 1992, 1).
